Stone Mountain

I went to Atlanta this weekend to visit a friend.  While I was there, she wanted to hike up Stone Mountain since her husband didn't really want to do it with her.  I decided to take on the challange and do it.

At first it didn't seem like much.  Pretty easy elevation, slow and steady and pretty solid rocks to walk on.

I took this image from Wikipedia, so I did not take it, but that's what it looked like.

Then sure enough, it started getting really difficult.  I made my friend take many breaks for me so I wouldn't die.  My heart literally felt likt it was going to jump out of my chest.  She was kind enough to allow these breaks because as she put it, she didn't want to have to do CPR on me.

This part right here is where it got REALLY tough.  I took a break immediately at the top of these stairs.

After those trees, I thought we were done.  Oh no.  Not quite.

I was prepared to stop there and my friend was ok with that.  After I took another long break, something inside me wanted to finish and say that I went to the top.  It's not really a great story if you say you ALMOST did it, right?

It really took a lot of will and determination, and I figured that I wouldn't do this again, so I went for it.  We made it to the top of the mountain.

Stone Mountain, GA is a 1,683 ft elevation and is 1 mile each way.

Now I know just how amazing these troops are for what they are doing in this photo.

Here are my "we did it!" shots.
Almost to the top happiness.

Actually at the top!

My friend wanted to take this one for a friend of hers.  Yes, there IS dippin dots at the top.  IF that needs to be YOUR motivation, then there is no judgement here.  I probably would have gone faster had I known!
